On a special bonus episode of Power Hour Alex Epstein interviews Patrick Moore, ecologist and cofounder of Greenpeace, on the realm causes of California’s wildfire disaster. Moore pins the blame squarely on “green” forest mismanagement.
Topics covered include:
– What are the top policy changes necessary to prevent dangerous, out of control wildfires (not the same as fires)?
– How does private vs. government ownership of land affect the likelihood of dangerous fires?
– What are the major drivers of dangerous, out of control wildfires?
– What places in the world have the best wildfire management?
– How have government policies changed for the worse in the US?
– How do you respond to claims that these fires are inevitable because of climate changes?
– Dr. Moore’s forthcoming book on invisible catastrophes.

From Alex Epstein, host of Power Hour
On this week’s Power Hour I interview Dr. Bjorn Lomborg, author of False Alarm: How Climate Change Panic Costs Us Trillions, Hurts the Poor, and Fails to Fix the Planet.
As I discussed in my review of the book several weeks ago, I think this is an extremely valuable book, on two counts above all.
1. It documents in case after case how the media and political leaders wildly distort the conclusions of mainstream climate research.
2. It documents in case after case how human adaptation can neutralize climate danger.
The book was recently attacked in a New York Times “review” by the famous near-socialist economist Joseph Stiglitz. Bjorn systematically refuted the pseudo-review on this impressive LinkedIn article.
On the show we discuss:
* How trusted media sources manipulated a climate research paper to predict 187 million climate refugees when the number was actually around 300,000 (half the number of people who move out of California every year) * Why we always need to look for positive and negative impacts, not just one or the other
* How many seconds worth of electricity all of America’s batteries can store today
* The true state of solar and wind in the world today
* How people in developing countries around the world demand “real electricity,” not the meager, unreliable electricity provided by much-heralded solar installations
* The prospects for nuclear energy
* Some of the crude errors of the New York Times review of False Alarm
* How global capitalism will encourage energy progress even when specific technophobic countries reject it
16 Jul
On this week’s Power Hour Alex Epstein interviews Dr. Patrick Moore, ecologist and co-founder of Greenpeace, about climate catastrophism.
Moore eviscerates climate catastrophism by looking at rising CO2 levels from a scientific and pro-human perspective–not the pseudoscientific and anti-human perspective that dominates today.
Topics include:
-Why Moore left Greenpeace.
-The beginnings of the climate catastrophe movement.
-Why Moore believes human beings would not only survive but survive better at far higher average temperatures (which would be concentrated toward the poles).
-Why Moore believes that contrary to being in a Sixth Extinction, we are actually at an unprecedented time of biodiversity with no end in sight.
-Why Moore believes “ocean acidification” claims are totally meritless.
-The commonality among opposition to plastics, GMOs, nuclear energy, and fossil fuels.
-Moore’s unrefuted theory that human beings actually saved life on Earth from terminal decline in CO2 levels.

On this episode of Power Hour Alex Epstein interviews Naomi Seibt, the 19-year-old German teenager who has been called “the anti-Greta” for her articulate and outspoken challenges to climate catastrophism.
The focus of the discussion is the outrageous attempt of the German government to take down her videos challenging climate catastrophism and advocating what she calls “climate realism.”
Instead of trying to resolve the issue quietly, Naomi says “I’m going to go big this time. And I’m going to involve the press. I’m going to make this very public….people will see what’s going on and how they try to silence us. And I think that will make them question the issue a lot more.”

Alex Epstein interviews Matt Ridley on the topic of “how energy innovation works.” Drawing from Ridley’s new book, “How Innovation Works,” they discuss:
-Why Ridley considers “the conversion of heat to work” to be perhaps the most important innovation.
-The true story of innovation in fracking and why the conventional narrative about it being a government-led innovation is false.
-Why there’s so little innovation in nuclear–and what to do about it.
-Why freedom is crucial to innovation.
28 May
On this episode of Power Hour, Alex Epstein and Steffen Henne discuss:
-Why no company is or can be 100% renewable for the foreseeable future.
-The three dishonest techniques companies use to claim that they are “100% renewable” or “carbon neutral.”
-How Google, Microsoft, and Amazon use these techniques to deceive the public.
-Why companies’ refusal to consider nuclear energy is cowardly.
-How 100% renewable propaganda pollutes the energy debate.

From Alex Epstein, host of Power Hour
On this week’s Power Hour I interview economist Ray Niles on how a freer market can help us protect ourselves from COVID-19.
We covered topics including:
– How price controls, in the form of anti-“price-gouging” laws, caused – shortages of vital medical supplies and other supplies.
– How we are in a critical moment for freedom in America.
– How “temporary” incursions on freedom rarely go away.
– How a freer market in hospitals would increase capacity.
– The long-term consequences of money-printing and “stimulus.”
7 May
In a bonus episode of Power Hour I interview one of my favorite COVID commentators, economist Daniil Gorbatenko, about the overwhelming evidence that the lockdown mantra “safer inside” is wrong.
Being inside increases our risk of a dangerous infection from COVID-19 by a) exposing millions to higher doses of the virus and b) decreasing immunity.
Being outside by contrast, exposes us to lower doses of the virus and increases our immunity.
So not only are the lockdowns catastrophically destructive to every aspect of life besides COVID-19, they also make many and likely most Americans more vulnerable to harm from COVID-19 itself.
7 May
On this week’s Power Hour I discuss “The Five Things Planet of the Humans Gets Totally Wrong.”
1. It evades how bad the “natural” planet was for human life.
2. It evades how good today’s humanized planet is for human life.
3. It evades our ability to create new value and grow indefinitely.
4. It evades our ability to produce more value with fewer side effects (e.g., nuclear).
5. It evaluates the state of the planet by an anti-human standard (unchanged nature), not a pro-human standard (human flourishing).
30 Apr
From Alex Epstein, host of Power Hour. On this week’s Power Hour I discuss “The Five Things Planet of the Humans Gets (Mostly) Right.”
1. Green energy is a high-impact industrial process
2. Green energy has many undesirable environmental impacts
3. Green energy is hugely dependent on fossil fuels
4. “100% renewable” is energy accounting fraud
5. Leading green energy advocates are a terrifying combination of ignorant and dishonest
Next week I’ll cover “The Five Things Planet of the Human Gets Totally Wrong.”
23 Apr
From Alex Epstein, host of Power Hour. This week’s Power Hour features a 2 hour interview with philosopher Onkar Ghate, focusing on why lockdowns were never a necessary or proper response to COVID-19.
Dr. Ghate, a longtime colleague (and mentor) of mine, has been doing some great work on what a truly American, pro-freedom, approach to infectious diseases looks like.
Some topics we covered include:
9 Apr
26 Mar
On this week’s Power Hour I explain why I’ve jumped into the COVID-19 policy debate and why I believe bad thinking methods are driving leading predictions and policies. Then I offer a first draft of a path forward, which I call “Don’t Stop Living, Live Smarter.” The six key steps are:
Step 1: Acknowledge the difficult reality we are in.
Step 2: Recognize that an indefinite universal lockdown is both impractical and immoral.
Step 3: Massively increase testing and transparency
Step 4: Liberate American ingenuity to massively increase treatment ability
Step 5: Help the highly vulnerable minority protect themselves.
Step 6: Go back to work (and school) with virus-prevention best-practices.
18 Mar
On this week’s episode of Power Hour, Alex Epstein discusses four ideas you won’t hear anywhere else:
-The increasingly prevalent COVID-19 policy of indefinite universal isolation is immoral and un-American
-Climate change fixation blinds us to real threats like COVID-19
-A Green New Deal would be fatal in the fight against COVID-19
-The Corona Recession is a mild preview of the Green New Deal

Dr. Sharma has written numerous publications and conference proceedings, including pieces like “Hydraulic Fracturing: Facts and Myths”. Here are some of the questions that will be answered:
-What is fracking?
-What exactly is horizontal drilling?
-What chemicals are used in the process?
-How does fracking impact our environment?
-And much more

On this week’s Power Hour “best of” episode, I talk to Robert Zubrin, author of Merchants of Despair: Radical Environmentalists, Criminal Pseudo-Scientists, and the Fatal Cult of Antihumanism.
Dr. Zubrin’s is a fascinating history of the theory and practice of what Zubrin calls “anti-humanism”–the belief that “human beings are pathogens whose activities need to be suppressed in order to protect a fixed ecological order with interests that stand above those of humanity.” Zubrin traces anti-humanism from the doctrines of Thomas Malthus centuries ago, which led to murder and sterilization campaigns in the name of protecting ourselves and the planet from “overpopulation,” to the racist social mis-interpretations of the theory of evolution that led to mass-murder in the name of protecting ourselves and the planet from “degeneration of the gene pool,” to the modern “environmentalist” movement’s war against life-saving practical energy, pesticides, and genetically-modified organisms, in the name of saving ourselves and the planet from an “excessive” human “footprint.”
27 Nov
On this week’s Power Hour “best of” episode, I talk to Dr. Edward Calabrese, professor of toxicology at the Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
We discuss the linear no-threshold dose-response model, which regulatory agencies use to set pollution standards, and his findings about a more realistic “hormetic” response model that could improve regulatory standards and human health if adapted.

Here are three things we know about man-made global warming. First, the consequences will be terrible if we don’t take quick action to limit carbon emissions. Second, in pure economic terms the required action shouldn’t be hard to take: emission controls, done right, would probably slow economic growth, but not by much. Third, the politics of action are nonetheless very difficult.
…
So why is the opposition to climate policy so intense?
Well, think about global warming from the point of view of someone who grew up taking Ayn Rand seriously, believing that the untrammeled pursuit of self-interest is always good and that government is always the problem, never the solution. Along come some scientists declaring that unrestricted pursuit of self-interest will destroy the world, and that government intervention is the only answer. It doesn’t matter how market-friendly you make the proposed intervention; this is a direct challenge to the libertarian worldview.
And the natural reaction is denial — angry denial.
As you’ll see, I have some things to say about Dr. Krugman’s analysis :-).
